The Massassauga

Back to Adventures in Nature

Our first portaging adventure was in the breathtaking Massassauga Park.  It is a water access only park, so there's no alternative to a canoe or kayak.  We had the impressive, and remote, Site 17, which provided amazing views and secluded canoeing.  The trip in was brutal, with heavy rain and wind, but we made it to the site in four hours.  Drenched, we unpacked, set up our ironically dry tent (everything else was soaked!), and hoped for better weather.  The wind cleared the storm and gave way to brighter skies.  The rest of our trip was breezy, but sunny, and filled with the beauty of unspoiled Canadian wilderness.

Having breakfast by the fire is a great way to stay warm on a crisp morning in May.

Our site was situated on a peninsula on Spider Lake, so we had fantastic water access and Scenic landscapes to photograph.

We climbed to the top of the rock formations at our site and found a great view of Spider Lake.

We canoed and fished on the lake every day, taking full advantage of the fact that we were the only ones there.

Mark and Hamish went out at dusk to get in some last - light fishing.  You can't see them in the picture, but there were two ducks following the canoe around as Mark paddled.  Worried that he might accidentally hook a bird, Mark came back to the camp.

Our over-flowing canoe, packed to go home.
We stopped for a break, after portaging our gear, before
making the final ride back to the Three Legged Lake access point.
We were sad to leave, but hope that we will be able to
go back to The Massassauga some time soon.
